Description of legislation: A person caring for a seriously ill close relative is entitled to payments from the sickness insurance scheme and has the right to be absent from work for up to 60 days. The number of days refers to the person being cared for. The carer and the person cared for must both be registered at the social insurance office (i.e. the carer must be under 65 years of age), and the care must take place in Sweden. Payments are payable at full, half or one quarter rate. Starting January 1, 1998, the level of payment is 80% of the income qualifying for sickness benefit.
