Karen Schlag, PhD

Dr. Schlag is a postdoctoral fellow researcher at the Sealy Center on Aging at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) at Galveston. Her mixed methods research primarily focuses on developing ways to support caregivers and enhance patient care experiences for older adults. She currently serves as a co-investigator on a NIA R61/R33 grant to test an elder mistreatment risk assessment tool and support intervention for persons with cognitive impairment and their family caregivers. As part of this work, Dr Schlag has led studies identifying risk factors for elder abuse using linked Medicare and Home Healthcare data as well as qualitatively examining family caregiver knowledge of elder mistreatment. Dr. Schlag also provides support to the UTMB Sealy Center on Aging Healthy Aging and Technology Initiative, which is exploring intelligent home-based technologies to help older adults safely age in place and support family members.
