On May 13, 2026, Jason Resendez, President and CEO of the National Alliance for Caregiving (NAC), testified before the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging on the growing challenges facing family caregivers—particularly the 16 million Americans in the “sandwich generation” balancing work, raising children, and caring for aging or ill loved ones simultaneously.
Drawing from new findings from Caregiving in the US 2025, NAC and AARP’s landmark caregiving research study, Resendez highlighted the financial, emotional, and health toll caregiving places on families across the country. His testimony underscored how caregivers are providing increasingly complex care responsibilities, often with little formal training, support, or financial protection; while serving as the backbone of the nation’s long-term care system.
Throughout the hearing, Resendez called attention to the urgent need for policies that better recognize and support caregivers, including strengthening financial security, improving access to services and supports, reducing administrative barriers, and addressing the growing isolation and burnout many caregivers experience.
“Millions of Americans are doing this work every day out of love and necessity,” said Resendez during his testimony. “We have the data. We have the solutions. What we need now is the political will to better support family caregivers.”
NAC is grateful to the Committee for elevating the experiences of family caregivers and advancing bipartisan conversations around caregiving policy solutions.
